Remake Patek Philippe: Buying the Calatrava 5227G-010 From the Official Store

Okay, so, I’ve been itching to get my hands dirty with a new project, and what better way to do it than to remake a Patek Philippe Calatrava 5227G-010? I mean, who wouldn’t want to try their hand at recreating such a classic beauty? This watch, it’s just so sleek and timeless, you know? And the official Patek Philippe store? Forget about it, way out of my league, haha.

First things first, I had to do my homework. I spent hours, and I mean hours, just staring at pictures of this watch online. I wanted to get every little detail right. I looked up everything about the Patek Philippe website, what’s the wait time, what’s the price and etc. The 5227G-010 is part of the Calatrava line, which, from what I gather, is all about that simple, elegant look. The original has this gorgeous white gold case, and it’s super slim. I found that a new Calatrava 6119G sells for over $33,000, and even used ones go for around $26,000! Some models take almost a year on the waiting list. But yeah, I was set on making my own version.

Next up, I needed to gather my materials. Now, I’m not made of money, so I couldn’t exactly go out and buy a chunk of white gold. Instead, I decided to use some stainless steel I had lying around. It’s not the same, but it’s got a similar vibe, right? I mean, it’s shiny, and that’s what counts. And for the strap, I went with a nice, black leather one I found at a local craft store. It has that classic feel, and I figured it would match the overall look I was going for.

Now, the fun part – actually putting it all together. This was definitely the most challenging part of the whole project. I started with the case, shaping the steel to match the dimensions of the original 5227G-010. I have to say that is not an easy feat. The Calatrava is known for its thin profile. I used a small hammer and some other tools to get it just right. It took a few tries, and a couple of, let’s say, “happy accidents,” but I eventually got it to a point where I was happy with it. I even managed to add that little sapphire crystal glass on top, just like the original! It looks pretty neat, if I do say so myself.

The dial was another beast altogether. I printed out a picture of the original dial, the one with the fancy Patek Philippe logo and those elegant hour markers. After that, I carefully cut it out and glued it onto a thin piece of metal. And, I even managed to find some tiny hands that looked similar to the ones on the real 5227G-010. I attached them to a basic watch movement I bought online, and voila, I had a working watch!

Putting the movement inside the case was a bit tricky. I had to make sure everything was aligned perfectly, and that the crown (you know, the little knob you use to set the time) was in the right place. It took some fiddling, and a few moments of panic when I thought I’d broken something, but I finally got it all in there.

  • Step 1: Research, research, research. Look at pictures, read about the watch, and understand its design.
  • Step 2: Gather materials. You don’t need the most expensive stuff, just things that give you the look you’re going for.
  • Step 3: Shape the case. This is where you get to be a sculptor. Take your time and try to match the original design.
  • Step 4: Create the dial. You can print out a picture or design your own. Get creative!
  • Step 5: Assemble the movement. This is the heart of your watch. Make sure the hands are attached and everything is working.
  • Step 6: Put it all together. Carefully place the movement inside the case and make sure everything is aligned.
  • Step 7: Add the strap. Choose a strap that complements the overall design of your watch.

Finally, I attached the leather strap, and there it was – my very own, handmade Patek Philippe Calatrava 5227G-010. Okay, it’s not exactly like the original. It doesn’t have the same weight, and it’s definitely not made of the same fancy materials. But you know what? It’s mine. I made it with my own two hands, and that’s something I’m really proud of. Plus, it actually tells the time, which is pretty cool.

Is It Worth It?

So, is it worth it to try and remake a Patek Philippe Calatrava? Well, if you’re looking for a fun and challenging project, then I’d say go for it. It’s a great way to learn about watchmaking, and you get to flex your creative muscles. Just don’t expect to fool anyone into thinking it’s the real deal. But hey, you’ll have a unique timepiece that you can wear with pride, knowing that you made it yourself. And who knows, maybe one day you’ll be able to afford the real thing. But until then, this homemade version will do just fine.
